Why Your Consultation Matters More Than The Treatment - BY BIANCA
When people imagine booking their first aesthetic appointment, they tend to focus on the treatment itself.
Will Botox hurt? How long do fillers last? What happens afterwards – will I be weirdly bruised?
The consultation often feels like the bit you have to sit through before getting to the interesting part.
In reality, and from my experience in my private aesthetics clinic in Rustington, it's usually the other way around.
A good consultation can completely change the outcome of a treatment. Not because it involves anything particularly complicated, but because it's the point where assumptions get challenged, concerns get addressed, and a personalised plan starts to take shape.
I've lost count of the number of times someone has arrived convinced they need one treatment, only for us to discover during our conversation that something else would suit them far better.
That's not because clients don't know what they want. Quite often they do. It's simply that most people aren't looking at their face through the same lens as a practitioner. They're noticing a line that bothers them, skin that suddenly feels less firm than it used to, or a feature they've become self-conscious about in photographs. What they're experiencing is completely valid, but the solution isn't always as straightforward as they imagine.
This is one of the reasons consultations should never feel rushed.
The best aesthetic treatments aren't created from a menu. They're created through conversation.
Two people can walk into a clinic with exactly the same concern and leave with completely different treatment plans. One person might benefit from anti-wrinkle injections. Another might be far better suited to skin boosters, a course of microneedling, or sometimes no treatment at all. The difference comes from understanding the person sitting in front of you rather than simply treating the concern they've identified themselves.
That's also why I think reassurance is such an important part of the process.
Aesthetic treatments can feel surprisingly emotional. Even clients who are excited about their appointment often arrive with a few nerves. Some are worried about looking unnatural. Others are concerned they'll make the wrong decision or won't recognise themselves afterwards. These are incredibly common concerns, and they deserve proper discussion rather than a quick answer.
By the time a consultation is finished, my aim is that every client understands not only what treatment has been recommended, but why.
Sometimes that means moving forward with treatment. Sometimes it means taking more time to think about it. Occasionally it means deciding not to proceed at all.
And that's genuinely OK.
The role of a consultation isn't to convince someone to book. It's to help them make an informed decision that feels right for them.
In an industry that can sometimes feel focused on quick fixes and instant results, I think that's more important than ever.
Because great aesthetic outcomes don't start with a syringe, a treatment room, or a before-and-after photo.
They start with trust.
