Is There A "Right" Age To Start Aesthetic Treatments?
A question I get asked surprisingly often...
One of the first things people say when they sit down in my clinic isn't about Botox or fillers.
It's usually something like:
"I feel like I might be too young for this."
Or...
"Have I left it too late?"
It's such a common question, and an understandable one. We're constantly being told there's a 'perfect' time to start anti-ageing treatments. Social media is full of people in their twenties talking about preventative Botox, while celebrities in their sixties seem to have discovered the secret to never ageing at all.
It's enough to make anyone wonder if they've missed the boat.
The truth is, there isn't a magic number.
In fact, one of the biggest misconceptions about aesthetics is that age is the most important factor when deciding on treatment. It isn't. I pay far more attention to your skin, your concerns and what you're hoping to achieve than the date on your driving licence.
In Your 20s: It's Not About Doing Everything Early
Every now and then I'll meet someone in their twenties who's convinced they need Botox because they've seen it all over social media.
Sometimes preventative treatment can be appropriate, particularly if someone has very strong facial movement and is beginning to notice expression lines lingering after they stop smiling or frowning.
But just because something is trending doesn't mean everyone needs it.
For many people in their twenties, the biggest investment they can make isn't injectables at all. It's wearing SPF every day, building a good skincare routine and looking after the health of their skin.
Those habits will do far more for your skin over the next twenty years than chasing every treatment you see online.
Your 30s: When Small Changes Start To Appear
For many people, their thirties are when they first notice subtle changes.
Perhaps makeup isn't sitting quite as smoothly. Maybe your skin feels a little less luminous than it once did, or those frown lines seem to linger just a little longer than they used to.
This is often when clients begin exploring aesthetic treatments for the first time.
The emphasis isn't usually on changing how they look. It's simply about keeping their skin looking fresh and rested.
For some, that might mean anti-wrinkle treatment. For others, it could be microneedling or skin boosters to improve hydration and encourage collagen production.
There's no checklist that says you need one treatment by a certain age. It's always about what's right for you.
Your 40s And 50s: Looking Refreshed, Not Different
By the time we reach our forties and fifties, our skin naturally starts producing less collagen and elastin. We also lose volume in certain areas of the face, which can contribute to a more tired appearance.
That doesn't mean the goal suddenly becomes looking twenty again.
In fact, I'd argue the most beautiful results at this stage are often the most subtle.
A carefully planned treatment can soften lines, improve skin quality or restore a little volume without changing your expression or making you look like you've 'had work done'.
When treatments are approached thoughtfully, friends and family often notice that you look well rather than trying to work out what's changed.
What If You're Over 60?
One of the biggest myths in aesthetics is that it's 'too late' to start.
It isn't.
Healthy, radiant skin is worth investing in at any age.
While every treatment has its limitations, there are still plenty of options that can improve skin quality, hydration and confidence later in life. The key is having realistic expectations and choosing treatments that work with your natural features rather than against them.
Age should never be a reason to dismiss aesthetic treatments altogether.
So... When Is The Right Time?
Personally, I think the right time is when something starts bothering you.
Not because Instagram says you should.
Not because your friend has had a treatment.
Not because you feel pressured to keep up.
If you catch yourself looking in the mirror and thinking, "I just look a bit tired lately," or "I don't feel like I look as fresh as I used to," that's often the right time to have a conversation.
Notice I said conversation, not treatment.
Sometimes the best outcome from a consultation is simply understanding your options.
Sometimes it's discovering you don't need anything at all.
And sometimes it's making one small change that gives you a little more confidence every time you catch your reflection.
The Bottom Line
There isn't a perfect age to start aesthetic treatments.
There never has been.
The best treatment plans aren't built around birthdays. They're built around people.
Every face ages differently. Every client has different goals. That's why no two consultations are ever quite the same.
Whether you're curious about your first treatment or simply wondering what options are available, the most important thing isn't how old you are.
It's finding a practitioner who listens first, explains honestly and helps you choose what's genuinely right for you.
